Saint George and the Dragon
A medieval legend reconstructed through the surfaces of Barcelona.
The artwork
The legend of Saint George tells of a knight who kills a dragon and, in one of its best-known traditions, of a rose growing from the creature’s blood. In Catalonia, Sant Jordi became part of the cultural identity of Barcelona, and the rose became one of the symbols of 23 April.
Casa Batlló carries that relationship into architecture: the profile and coloured surfaces of its roof are commonly read as the scaled back of the dragon. The artwork begins from this overlap between myth and city. The knight disappears, leaving the dragon, the golden spear and the rose.
The creature’s body is fragmented and recomposed through colours and shapes that recall trencadís. In embroidery, the architectural reference moves from ceramic and mosaic into a textile structure.

The embroidered form
Fragmented colour areas translate the language of mosaic into thread. The spear fixes the direction of the composition; the rose marks the point at which destruction becomes transformation.
